Introduction:
A writing that shows my awareness of voice and audience is my response to Amanda Vandenbosch’s second discussion board posting about identity. The prompt for this discussion board was to pick three quotes from Anzaldua’s essay and state whether they hold true or seem controversial. We were assigned to think about the relationship between our identity and our linguistic choices. Amanda wrote that "We should celebrate diversity and not try to change everybody... People who come to this country do not have to be completely Americanized, they should keep their own identity but grow and learn" (Vandenbosch). In response to this statement, I told Amanda how I agreed with the first part of her statement and disagreed with the latter.
I believe my reply was a prime example of how I have learned to keep the audience interested and involved throughout my postings. When I challenged Amanda, I stated “The question is, what is it going to take for our country to turn it around and become more welcoming to immigrants?” I believe this question would have stimulated the audience’s thinking. Also, this would have given them a new perspective on the topic. A sense of voice is portrayed in my posting which catches the reader’s attention and causes them to intellectualize my post at a deeper level. With my continued practice of doing this type of “public” writing, I have become a stronger reader and writer.
